Writer and English & Creative Writing Masters Candidate Allison Graves is in an art collective with Amery Sandford, a local artist who is currently fulfilling her residency at St Michael’s Print Shop as the 2014-2015 Don Wright Scholar. The two have paired up to curate a juried visual art and literary exhibition at St. Michael’s Printshop during this weekend’s Hold Fast Festival.
“Maybe, Probably” explores people’s interactions with technology and social media. “The relationships that exist between a person and their social media presence, or their views on pop culture are interesting to us because it’s a question that everyone is continually trying to understand and answer,” says festival co-coordinator Allison Graves.
“The name of the exhibition, Maybe, Probably is relevant because we’re not promising we know anything but this lingering uncertainty is emblematic through the title of the show.”
The exhibition will consist of three parts: a collection of written work, an exhibition of prints and drawings, as well as the launch of LIKE ME, a small publication by the curators themselves.
“Amery and I have both moved to St. John’s this year and are therefore eager to understand the community we are integrating into. We find that the arts culture in St. John’s is unique and special in its intimacy and we wanted to explore this and say thank you by continuing to ask questions.”
Allison says the art portion of the show is very strong and has allowed both her and Amery to offer a smart platform for young artists to have their work seen and understood. The literary portion of the exhibition consists of zines; self published non-profit mini magazine. There’ll be fiction, poetry, and non-fiction.
As for their own publication, Like Me, Graves says it’s a zine consisting of three short stories written by Allison Graves and illustrated by Amery Sandford. It’s one of their many collaborations since moving here.
“We have a very healthy and lovely working relationship that informs our friendship and vice versa. Our ideas are so similar in their execution that collaboration seems natural and easy. In this case we found ourselves collaborating our similar ideas about the connectivity of a small place and how that is maintained through technological means.”
