To celebrate World Refuge Week, St. John’s based Refugee and Immigration Advisory Counci l(RIAC), have soem unique events planned, and they start this evening. The events aim to demonstrate the hardships that refugees face worldwide, but also the positive impact that refugees have on our city.
June 15, 7-9pm: Movie Night
A viewing of TED Talks about refugees, with a discussion to follow. THis will take place at 204 Water Street, Suite 3000.
June 16, 1-2pm: Solidarity Walk
Leaving from their offices at 204 Water Street, RIAC will host a walk to Harbourside Park in solidarity with the struggles refugees face. This event takes place in association with the Canadian Council for Refugees and in partnership with the Association for New Canadians.
June 17, 7-9pm: International Food & Art Social
A social at RIAC’s office (204 Water Street), featuring international food and art made by immigrants and refugees.
June 20, 12-4pm: Human Library Event
A “Human Library” event is one in which participants can “borrow” an individual — instead of a book — for mental stimulation. People can be “Checked Out” for 20-30 minutes for an interesting conversation. Why check out a book for a story when you could check out a person for a story?
