Shortlists Announced for the 29th NL Arts Council Awards

Every year, the Newfoundland and Labrador Arts Council (NLAC) celebrates local art in all disciplines in a big, gala-worthy way. Yesterday, they released this year’s shortlists, in several categories, along side the names of new Hall of Honour inductees. This year’s gala will take place April 26th, 8PM, at the Clarenville Event Centre Theatre.

“Clarenville is sure to be a great host for this year’s gala, which will celebrate the creative work of professional artists and arts organizations throughout the province,” says Windsor. “We will also collectively acknowledge long term contributions and support of the arts and culture industry through the Hall of Honour inductions and Patron of the Arts award. We’re looking forward to putting on a great show that applauds our strong provincial arts and cultural community.”

Memorial University Arts in Education 2013
for an artist who has made an outstanding contribution to arts in education in NL over a number of years.

Jason Ross Sellars – mixed media / visual / theatre
Chris Short – visual
Darren White  – music

Cox & Palmer Arts Achievement 2013
for a practicing artist who has made an outstanding contribution to the cultural life of NL over a number of years.

  • Barbara Doran  – film
  • Rosemary House – film
  • Pamela Morgan – music

CBC Emerging Artist 2013
Recognizes new and undisputed talent in an emerging artist, group or arts organization 

  • Stephen Dunn – film
  • Mike Gough – visual
  • Candice Pike – dance

BMO Bank of Montreal Artist of the Year 2013
Recognizes the art or activity of a person, group or organization  in 2013.

This year, details about this award will be reserved for the main gala!

Fortis Properties Arts Hall of Honour

 

2014 will see two new inductees into the Fortis Properties Arts Hall of Honour. This award recognizes a person, group or organization that has made a distinguished lifetime contribution to our province’s cultural life. The inductees for 2014 are Dudley Cox, founder of the Newfoundland Travelling Theatre Company, and Noreen Golfman, the founder of the St. John’s Women’s International Film Festival.

Patron of the Arts
Recognizes a person, group, or organization demonstrating an ongoing commitment to the arts in NL.

This year’s winner: Marlene Cahill.

Details of the 29th annual awards gala:

Tony Murray has come on board for his second consecutive year as producer and director of the Arts Awards show. John Sheehan will be the host for the evening. He will be joined by musical hosts the Long Distance Runners. The program will include performances by Katie Baggs as well as Monica Walsh and Bryan Hennessey. 

In addition to monetary awards, every year, a local visual artist is selected to make art for the award winners. This year,that artist is Scott Goudie. “Goudie has mastered mezzo tinting and pastels, and using these techniques as well as others, he presents distinct landscapes that demonstrate a deep sense of place.”
