Sci-fi on the Rock is Newfoundland’s largest sci-fi festival, and it’s entering its eighth year this year, with a variety of guests and events. As their press release says, “The Holiday Inn Hotel in St. John’s will be overrun by aliens, monsters, and superheroes.” The event will take place this Friday through Sunday.

The annual Sci-Fi on the Rock Festival is a meeting grounds for nerds from across the province and beyond. Guests for Sci-Fi on the Rock 8 will include Michael Hogan (Col. Saul Tigh of Battlestar Galactica), Musetta Vander (Stargate SG1, Buffy the Vampire Slayer), Aron Eisenberg (Nog from Star Trek: Deep Space 9), and Erin Fitzgerald (of Monster High, Bleach, Bravely Default) as well as Oscar-winning makeup effects artist and Mike McCarty. McCarthy has almost 200 films worth of guts, gore, villains, and severed limbs to his credit, including the Kill Bill movies, Grindhouse, The Walking Dead, and Breaking Bad.

Other guests and events include everything from readings by local authors, to general discussions (like media adaptations of comic books), to games of zombie trivia or Geek Survivor, and lectures on making video games or “The Many Faces of Dr. Who.” It’s really a jam-packed weekend, here’s the list of events: http://www.scifiontherock.com/workshops/

There will also be workshops and panels for all ages, a large vendors’ room with collectibles and locally made goods for sale, a film festival component, opening night dance, costume contest, and much more.
