ROGER ANDREWS TO APPEAR ON CHOPPED CANADA

Roger Andrews owns Relish Burgers, and is an instructor at the College of the North Atlantic. He’s the latest local chef to take a run at The Food Network’s highly competitive TV show, Chopped Canada. In a single episode, 4 chefs square off to make the best dish in consecutive rounds – an appetizer, and entree, and a desert. They’re shown 3-5 ingredients they have to use, then race against a clock to produce something in time. A panel of judges kick out one competitor per round, based on what they’ve cooked up. Local chef Mark McCrowe (The Club, Aqua) has won the show in the past. Roger may as well: tune in June 6th episode to see if he bagged the $10,000 prize. It’s a themed episode: “Carnival.”

FORMER DRUG-TRAFFICKING COP IS NOW ALSO A CAB-STEALING JOYRIDER

Former HMP correctional officer Edward Taylor is known for smuggling drugs like marijuana, Percocet, and Oxy into jail for prisoners. He served 16 months for it, but he was back in the news in April for stealing a cab and leading the police in a chase. When he eventually ditched the car and fled on foot, police dogs helped police officers catch him. He was impaired at the time, and has been charged with failure to stop for police, theft over $5,000, uttering threats, impaired driving, and breaches of court orders.

PINCHING PENNIES FOR PEPSI PAYS OUT 1 MILLION

Botwood’s Caroline Leyte went to Shopper’s Drug Mart to get in on a 4 for $5 deal on Pepsis. She normally buys her lottery tickets elsewhere, but since she was in Shopper’s she bought one there, and now she can thank Pepsi eternally for putting her in the right lottery place at the right lottery time. She and her husband are now 1 million dollars richer. They were so shocked they won, they sat outside the store afraid to go in “looking like a fool” claiming to have a winning ticket. Caroline bought a box of Rice Krispies while her husband nervously checked the ticket. In the last five months, Newfoundlanders have won more than $14 million from the Atlantic Lottery Corporation.

CHRIS KIRBY’S SURPRISE ENGAGEMENT ENCORE

One of the many events during this year’s East Coast Music Week was a fundraiser for a music therapy program at the Janeway Hospital, called Chris Kirby’s Soul Food Kitchen Party. At the end of Kirby’s set at the event, he left the stage but turned around, baffled by his band staying behind, as his partner, Victoria Howse, took the stage. She and the band broke out a song whose lyrics were clearly a wedding proposal. The song had been co-penned by ECMA nominee Charlie A’Court. He said yes, hearts melted, and various people were left feeling like they’d proposed to their partners in relatively lacklustre ways.

MAN STABBED … IN THE HEAD WITH A KEY!

With a headline that wild but true, it’s no surprise this happened at the Avalon Mall parking lot. Police are still looking for the person who took “keying” something to new heights. The 20-year old victim was treated at hospital and was not seriously hurt, despite having a key raked across his face and into his eyeball.
