The Arts and Culture Centre recently named Megan Gail Coles as their 2015-16 Artist-In-Residence in St. John’s. And as part of her residency, Coles will facilitate a weekly three-hour playwriting unit from October 2015 to February 2016. But she can’t do that without your submissions.
“In 2003, I was in a playwriting unit led by Robert Chafe. The work I did in that unit helped me get into theatre school, which is where I became a playwright,” says Coles. “Playwriting units are integral to the creation of new work and development of emerging voices. Do you want to write a play? Good. I want you to write a play, too. And I want to help.”
All submitted work will receive written dramaturgical feedback. Upon completion of the unit, participants will have a workshop for production-ready drafts of their scripts, as well as a writing reference to pursue funding and production opportunities.
To apply, all interested writers are encouraged to email a full working draft of a script, CV, and letter of support by August 31, 2015 to [email protected].
“We are excited to continue our relationship with Megan in this new capacity as Artist-In-Residence, and are looking forward to listening to the new works created by the playwrights in this new ACC unit in February,” says ACC Programming Manager Erin Barnhardt.
A public reading of the selected plays in development will be held in the Barbara Barrett Theatre in February 2016. Members of the ACC Playwrights Unit will have the opportunity to feature their plays – often for the first time publicly – as part of their series. Coles may also offer a sneak peek into her newest creations to the audience as well.
