A wise man probably once said that trivia is the best way to learn a thing or two about the place you call home. Only three of these facts are true. Lay off Google, and guess the false answer …

————————————————————————————————————-

1.) George Murray was recently named Poet Laureate for St. John’s. The Once, a popular local band, like his poetry so much they wanted to collaborate with him on a song. Their song, “A Song for Memory,” is an adaptation of a poem by George.

2.) Boreal felt lichen (Erioderma pedicellatum) is one of the most endangered species of lichen in the word. It has vanished from 3 of the 5 places it was known to live (New Brunswick, Norway, Sweden) and about 200 pieces of it exist in Nova Scotia. The rest of it — the survival of the species — depends on the work of a few scientists here in Newfoundland striving to keep it alive and well.

3.) Winky’s chip truck on George Street is known to have caught fire at least 3 times since opening.

4.) There are several old Newfoundland coins out there — maybe in some nan’s attic or basement — worth more than $100,000.
