Greener Pastures

“I was born and raised here, and I am grateful for that. But I feel like I don’t really fit in with so many aspects of the culture here. I suppose the drinking is one of the main things. I don’t drink and it’s hard to find a social scene that isn’t based around alcohol. I don’t particularly like the jigs and reels type music, or the common foods that people love here, or some of the outdoor activities that people like to do like camping, atvs, fishing, etc. I know this is a really wonderful place, but I am having a hard time finding my niche here.” – Bad Newfoundlander

  • I feel the same way. Not being into the “typical NL” lifestyle makes it hard. I met some incredibly friendly people through dance and arts especially doing swing dance at Lindy Hop on the Rock. Anyone can come, even with no dance/music experience and no partner. It’s surprisingly fun. Come with an open mind and try it before you judge it, trust me. 🙂 There are also a number of ballroom dancing groups in town if that’s more your thing.

  • i feel the exact same way! i dont drink, but i do like to go out, dt, dancing etc, im not into the baymen life either like atvs , and i hate newfie/irish music. i think im meant for a bigger city. oh well, someday, maybe!

  • You’re not alone, I know plenty of people living here who aren’t into the fiddly diddly tunes or ATVs, or even drinking. The question is, what ARE you into? There may already be social circles you fit into that you may not know about. I hope you’re able find your niche here! 🙂

  • Bad Newfoundlander,

You’re not a bad Newfoundlander, just a Newfoundlander of another sort. Don’t give up just yet; I’m sure there is a place for you there. It will be worth it.
