“I wish places like The Ship and The Levee would start getting really picky about who can play there. DOn’t get me wrong, there’s SOOO many amazing bands in town right now. But so many shitty ones too. I don’t mean ‘i don’t like them,’ I mean, they’re just not musically good. I’d love it if I didn’t have to check The Overcast’s event listings. If I could just go to my favourite bars at 12 and know a good band is playing.” – RockBitch

You would have a perfectly legitimate gripe if this was a large metropolis, like Toronto or Vancouver. Thing is, we have a St. John’s-sized pool of talent – larger than other cities, given the musical culture buoyed by government subsidies. But that pool still winds up being spread out very thinly. The Levee is in a particularly bad situation, given their clientele. Traditional and country/western bands wouldn’t fit their bill, and they need to compete with many other bars for contemporary talent – The Ship, The Rose and Thistle, and half the bars that empty out onto the deck, among others.
Live music usually helps to draw in costumers, and the profit margins for bars are miniscule. Hence why bars like The Levee often wind up scraping the bottom of the talent barrel on a Thursday night to draw in a dozen or so hipsters.
