Commander Ventures is building a 12-unit condo at 21 Holloway Street. It’s above the parking lot that is across from Haymarket Square on Duckworth Street (where Afterwords, Moksha Yoga, and Bernard Stanleys is). But they might not be building the one they had in mind.
The City of St. John’s has disapproved the developer’s plan (see above) on the grounds it’s too modern for the downtown core. Coun. Art Puddister put forward the arguably personal opinion that it’s “just an ordinary modern-style condominium building that you’d find anywhere … we’re hoping that they can probably design something that would be a little bit more architecturally pleasing to the eye.”
Puddister was relaying the sentiments of city staff, not councillors, for it’s city staff who aren’t fond of the design, and requested a change. It is expected city council will approve the proposed condos either way.
