EnRoute Magazine’s annual hunt for the best new restaurant in Canada has just confirmed what we already knew: Adelaide Oyster House is one of them. Another is The Merchant Tavern — making this the THIRD TIME Jeremy Charles and Jeremy Bonia have had a restaurant of theirs named to this list.

Their 2 previous nominations — wins, in fact — were for Atlantica and Raymonds. The duo launched The Merchant Tavern very recently, but just in time to make the list. Interestingly enough — Stephen Vardy, owner of Adelaide — also used to work at Atlantica.

Every year, Air Canada’s EnRoute Magazine assembles an impressive panel of food critics, journalists, cookbook authors, and more, to create a list of the best new restaurants in Canada. Mallard Cottage made the top 10 last year. And Fogo Island Inn has placed 3rd in the recent past.

This year’s final Top 10 list will appear in EnRoute’s November issue, after their food writer has visited all thirty restaurants — he books a reservation under a fake name, so he can experience the restaurant as someone not getting special treatment. But you can start voting too, at http://eatandvote.com/en

There’s incentive to deal with their insistence you log in to vote: you’ll be entered for a chance to win a trip for two to the nominated restaurant of your choice, plus $500 spending money.

EnROute calls Adelaide an “unapologetically fun oyster bar on Water Street. The bicoastal bivalve list goes down easy with a housemade sauce of mango and Scotch bonnet peppers. The soundtrack – Vampire Weekend, Talking Heads, Yeah Yeah Yeahs – is loud, and the cod tacos, scallop ceviche, and elk sausage are designed for a crowd.”

Of The Merchant Tavern, they say the Jeremys “launched a boisterous and more approachable tavern-style menu that plays to Newfoundland’s culinary strengths [with food that is a ] fun introduction to Charles’ strong suit: pan-roasted Newfoundland cod with baby turnips and apple cider reduction. Brooklyn’s Evil Twin brewing highlights the beer list.”
