“Your guide to feminism, activism, and change” is launching this week. According to its publisher, “For 2019, the annual A Woman’s Almanac is bigger, bolder, and more vibrant than ever! Brought to you by the St. John’s Status of Women Council, A Woman’s Almanac is a yearlong celebration of feminism, and your around-the-clock guide to a year of productivity, inclusivity, and activism.” The event will feature short readings from 2 Heather Gillis and Dawn Street, and a musical performance by Rachel Cousins.

Billed as “Mark Bragg & Friends,” this weekly show “full of rough stuff” is one of the most unique things happening in the local music scene. “It’s a little music club,” the event explains. “There are so many amazing musicians in this town, it’s heartbreaking not to have a band with each and every one of them. So I do that, every Thursday eve. We have Josh Ward and Chris Donnelly every week. With them and guest musicians, we explore back catalogue stuff, new stuff, and “in production” stuff. It will be fun. It’s not an open mic. But I might ask my favourite songwriters to share a song or two while we back them up.”

Never been to an opera before? Do something about it this week. Written by John Estacio and Robert Chafe, Ours tracks the aftermath of the battle of Beaumont Hamel through the story of Thomas Nangle, who was chaplain to the Newfoundland Regiment. Following the war, he was named to the Imperial War Graves Commission where he led efforts to properly bury the remains of much of the lost regiment across Europe. He established the existing five war memorial sites across Europe, including Beaumont Hamel, as well as the Newfoundland National War Memorial in St. John’s.

Introduction to Contemporary Art

Art educator Anne Pickard-Vaandering has been running this series of lively lectures about contemporary art at The Rooms. This month’s iteration of the series is all about land, landscape, and the natural world. After the lecture, she’ll take you to visit the art galleries for a tour of landscape artworks.
