5 Things To Do This Week

Get out of the house this week, you deserve it.

A Nightmare on Water Street
Tuesday, 6:30-8pm
@ The Black Sheep

Spend Halloween Eve at a scary reading & scary costume contest. All the reading slots have been filled, but it’s more fun to be a reading spectator than a reader anyway. Winners will be chosen by audience ballot. Costumes will be judged by host and horror expert Mike Hickey of Fright Hype. Bonus points if you come dressed as a spooky literary character. Reading prizes are really great, and the best costume winner gets a 2019 Sci-Fi on the Rock weekend pass.

Mireille Eagan’s Picks from the Vault
Halloween, 7-8
@ The Rooms

Mireille Eagan, Curator of Contemporary Art, dug deep to select creepy and otherworldly artworks in The Rooms’ collection. Works by Helen Parsons Shepherd, Jennie Williams, David Blackwood and Gerald Squires are on her list. Join Mireille, as she opens up about mystical art in visual culture. “Boo” Yeah! This program is included with general admission. Free for Rooms members.

Men of Misfortune
Thursday Through Sunday
8PM (with  2pm matinee on Sunday)

An original thriller with dark comic elements, Men of Misfortune stars Andy Jones and Greg malone. The play “chronicles the uncomfortable and unexpected reunion of two elderly brothers inside their childhood home on Craigmillar Avenue in St. John’s. A home (like the brothers themselves) that seems permanently stuck in time. As certain truths and transgressions emerge from the shadows, and territorial lines are drawn, Henry and Lester MacPherson soon realize that one of them may not be getting out of the house alive. And that’s just goddamn fine with them.”

Open Saison Pig Roast With QV Brewery & Mallard Cottage
Saturday, 4-10pm
@ Mallard Cottage

Quidi Vidi will be launching their new saison series at Mallard — a rhubard saison, raspberry saison, crab apple saison, and blueberry saison. That’s plenty of delicious, locally inspired saison beers to wash down a good old fashioned pig roast with. The spit roasted pig will be served with a buffet of side dishes, live music, and a tasting flight of all the saisons, for $65. These beers were brewed in very limited quantities, and you’d be the first to try 3 of the 4 new beers (the Rhubarb saison is currently in NLCs).
